Section 17
Proceedings for contempt of court
(1) The Supreme Court may proceed with contempt of court if anyone obstructs the administration of justice of the High Court or the District Court or disobeys the order or judgment.
(2) The High Court may take action for contempt of court if anyone obstructs the administration of justice or disobeys the order or judgment of the High Court or the subordinate district court or judicial body.
(3) The district court may take action for contempt of court if anyone obstructs the administration of justice or disobeys the order or judgment of the district court or the subordinate court or judicial body.
(4) If it is found to be in contempt of court while proceeding under sub-section (1), (2) or (3), the concerned court may impose imprisonment up to one year or a fine up to ten thousand rupees or both or any other appropriate order.
(5) A person who has been prosecuted for contempt of court may seek pardon before the court in any case without the judgment of the case. If the court is satisfied with the apology, it can keep the proceedings of such a case under review.
(6) Notwithstanding anything contained elsewhere in this section, if a person convicted of contempt of court pleads for forgiveness to the satisfaction of the court, the court may order that such sentence not be carried out, reduce it, change it or order that the sentence not be carried out if such condition is met.
