The work, duties and powers of the Department shall be as follows:-
(a) To formulate the necessary policies related to prison management and submit them to the Ministry, (b) to determine the necessary standards for the prisoners' service facilities, etc.,
(c) To develop the prison as a reformatory and to formulate and implement the necessary plan to put the inmates into productive work with psycho-social counseling,
(d) determining the basis and criteria for transfer of prisoners,
(e) Carrying out necessary structural and managerial work to make the prison gender-friendly and disability-friendly,
(f) Acting on imprisonment in accordance with prevailing laws,
(g) Monitoring, inspection and supervision of prisons.
