Section 174
<br> not to be transacted in marriage
Apart from traditional gifts, offerings, dakshina or a single piece of jewelry worn on the body, the bridegroom or the bride should not marry by demanding any kind of movable, immovable, dowry or any property or subject to transaction conditions.
(2) A person who commits an offense under sub-section (1) shall be punished with imprisonment up to three years or a fine of up to thirty thousand rupees or both.
(3) After getting married, one should not demand the movable, immovable property or dowry as per sub-section (1) or because of not giving such movable, immovable property or dowry, the bride or her relatives should not be harassed, harassed or subjected to any inhuman or humiliating behavior.
(4) A person who commits an offense under sub-section (3) shall be punished with imprisonment up to five years or a fine of up to fifty thousand rupees or both.
(5) If any property is taken in accordance with subsection (1) or (3), such property shall be returned to the person concerned.
